Description
This is a small, turned gavel made with original White House wood with the authentication plaque attached. The original pieces of wood for this gavel were supplied by the Renovation Commission’s memento program during President Harry Truman’s ca. 1950 renovation of the White House. It was offered as “Kit No. 1” – “Enough old pine to make a gavel”.
I have seen a number of gavels crafted with original White House wood over the years, but this is perhaps the smallest. It measures about 8.25 inches long with the head 2.5 inches wide. Presumably this was made for a ladies use or possibly a women’s organization such as the OES or other fraternal group. Typically, gavels for ladies were crafted smaller than normal.
The original small bronze authentication plate is attached to the handle. It reads “Original White House Material Removed in 1950” surrounding the Presidential seal. The plaque has the original pins but is slightly loose. It appears to have been stained a walnut color with some crackling on the finish. It also has some scuffing on the head from use.
Also included is a signed COA from WhiteHouseRelics.com.
