Description

This lucite display contains an actual piece of wood that was used in building the White House.

The White House underwent an extensive renovation under President Harry Truman from 1948-1952. The interior of the historic building was completely gutted and renovated. It was the most extreme renovation since it was rebuilt after the British burning in 1814.

During the renovation process, the demand for souvenirs was so great that the Renovation Commission decided to offer small pieces of the original material to the public. A souvenir office was set up at Fort Myer, Virginia to do this.

The small piece of wood attached to the display was cut from a larger piece that was sold to the public under this program. It was offered as Kit. No. 1 “Enough old pine to make a gavel.” The Kit had a small bronze plaque that read “Original White House Material Removed in 1950”.

The description card with the relic attached is contained in a lucite case that can easily be opened for inspection. The entire case measures about 4.25 x 2.75 inches. The actual wood piece measures just over ½ x ½ inch. A 2-piece adjustable stand is included, although the display can stand on its own.

A beautiful souvenir display with an actual piece of the White House!
