Description
Here is a wonderful set of bookends made with original White House sandstone with the authentication plaque attached. The original blocks of stone were supplied by the Renovation Commission’s memento program during President Harry Truman’s ca. 1950 renovation of the White House. They were offered as “Kit No. 13” – “Two pieces of stone to make bookends”.
I have seen a few of these stone bookend sets over the years, but I have never seen a set with hand crafted beautiful wood bases. The wood may be cherry, but I’m not 100% sure. The original owner may have crafted them, but the White House carpenters could also have made them as a special presentation as they had done with other pieces of the White House relics at the time. My guess is with the latter because of the quality of workmanship. The actual stones measure 4.75 x 4.75 x 2 inches. The bottom of the wood base measures about 7 x 3 inches and is about 2 inches high. The stones have some chipping on the back which the base nicely covers. There is also some minor edge chipping around. One stone has the bronze authentication plaque attached. It reads “Original White House Material Removed in 1950” surrounding the Presidential seal.
I do not think you will find another set of bookends made with original White House renovation pieces as nice as this set.
