Description

This candlestick was crafted by the National Lumber Manufactures Association using original Virginia Longleaf pine that supported the White House roof for 112 years. The original wood was removed during President Calvin Coolidge’s 1927 White House roof renovation.

The wood remaining after the renovation was auctioned off in 1928 and the National Association of Lumber manufacturers was the high bidder at $500 for a large quantity. From this wood was made candlesticks, gavels and blocks that were used to promote wood as a quality, long lasting building material.

This candlestick measures just over 7 inches high and 4 inches wide at the base. It is in beautiful original condition. There are 2 small original nail holes (not really a defect) and a very small dent near the top thin spindle. The original certifying information label on the bottom is in almost perfect condition, with very minor wear, which is rare on this piece. Any other example I have seen over the years has had damage and tears due to its location on the bottom of the piece. If there was a grading scale for this type of thing, I would give it a 9+.

I do not think you will find another candlestick made with original White House renovation wood as nice as this one.

Also included is a signed COA from WhiteHouseRelics.com.
